Introduction

From the last lesson, we have learned that the order of the universe, the wonders of creation, and even our experience can prove the existence of God. Therefore, if we were to seek after and worship God, we should find the true One. Why bother with worshipping a false God? This lesson provides a few reliable principles for us to find the true God.

  • The True God should be –

    • Omniscient (all-knowing) (Psalm 139:4

    • Omni-present (present everywhere) (Psalm 139:7,8

    • Omnipotent (almighty) (Mark 10:27

      • In the bible, there are about 300 prophecies concerning Jesus that were fulfilled. (the probability of having 8 prophecies fulfilled in a row is equal to 1 / 10^17)

  • Loving, Kind, Merciful (John 3:16

    • The God whom Christians believe in is a loving God. His love is unconditional. He does not require us to offer Him something first before He loves us. The bible says in 1 John 4:10,

“In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.”

  • Moreover, He loves every person in the world, no matter if he/she is rich or poor, young or old, educated or illiterate, kind or despicable. Mercy means to love someone who does not deserve love. Formerly, we all had rejected Him, yet He did not count that against us, but rather came to seek and call us. From this we see His kindness. (Compare that to some “gods” which help people to commit crimes and sin)

  • Holy, Righteous (Leviticus 11:44, Exodus 34:7b)

    • Interestingly, some “gods” are worshipped by all sorts of people from gangs, casinos, strip-clubs and those worshippers need NOT to confess their wrongdoings and repent. But their “gods” will still help them to gamble, to murder or to defraud. Why worship things like that if they will not even pass the standard of man’s law?

  • The God whom Christians believe in is holy. (Leviticus 11:44)

    • Someone will say, the God whom Christians believe in will judge the world in the future, so He is not as compassionate as their “god” because their “god” will turn a blind eye to their iniquities and wrongdoings. Yet, their “god’s” indifference only shows that he is unrighteous, having no standards.

  • God will not lower his standard due to man’s corruption. His standard is “...the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23a). But God is also love, and in His infinite wisdom, He sent His son Jesus Christ to die for us, so that whoever believes in Him, God will forgive. Therefore, Romans 6:23b says, “but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

  • No need of an image to be worshipped (God is Spirit)  (Romans 1:22-23

  • Here is a Chinese poem written by a scholar in the Ching Dynasty to describe idols:

一口無言,二目無光,三餐不食,四肢無力,五官不靈,

六親無靠,七竅不通,八面威風,久坐不動,實在無用。

  • Should the real God be sustained by physical things or be confined by the physical world? In fact, all the physical things were created by the God whom we believe in, therefore He does not need man to make an image for worship. Thus, the bible clearly says, God is Spirit, and He does not like people to make portraits of Him because any physical image of Him will cause misconceptions of His divinity and character, thus insulting Him.

Our Response / Prayer

“Dear God, I confess that I did not know you in the past, and worshipped idols because of my ignorance. I pray that You would forgive me. And from now on, I will have no ties with any idols, and acknowledge You as the only true God, and ask you to govern my whole life. Praise the Lord. In Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen.”
